One of mine is from back when I was a little girl, in my dad's small town doctor's office. I helped out after school by filing medical charts -- it's actually one of the ways I practiced the alphabet. But I remember, even as a small child, seeing neighbors and members of the community limiting their visits, or cutting their pills in half because they didn't have health insurance and couldn't afford the sticker price. My dad went out of his way to give them the care they needed regardless, but I was struck by how unfair it was -- that some people had to go without the basic health care or medicine they needed in a country like ours. I thought back on that experience when I decided to join the fight on the ground to pass health care reform in 2009. I reflected joyfully back on it again when the health care marketplace opened, and millions of Americans could finally access quality, affordable health care. And those charts I used to file?
