ZINC -- FOR YOUR NEXT STEPS . . .
WELCOME TO GRASSFIRE'S HEALTHWIRE REPORT!
. . . AND THE MEDICAL MYSTERY OF THE PREEMIES!

Dear HealthWIRE Subscriber,

I HOPE YOU CAUGHT "THINK ZINC! PART 1" FOR SOME OF THE VITAL BASICS ABOUT ZINC IN THE DIET!

And that leads to the obvious question. Where's the next part? "Think Zinc! Part 2 -- Foods and Supplements" is now up on the Liberty News website.

We trust you are enjoying our HealthWire stories. Keeping you in the know on crucial health developments is our watch phrase.

The figure shows zinc deficiency dermatitis manifesting as bullous and erosive lesions on the hands and feet in a newborn infant in Washington, DC during December 2012. In mid-December 2012, three extremely premature infants with cholestasis in a neonatal intensive care unit developed dermatitis in the diaper region, perioral erosions, and bullae on the dorsal surfaces of their hands and feet. That brings us back to zinc -- which is very important for the skin. This importance is made all too graphic in THE MYSTERY OF THE PREMATURE BABIES.

The two photos on the right -- taken recently -- demonstrate the afflictions on the tiny hands and feet of a newborn. The pictures are  courtesy of S.A. Norton and the Children's National Medical Center, Washington, DC.

Three premature babies there were suffering these lesions. The sores also appeared on the faces and diaper regions of the children. It's bad enough seeing the hands and feet!

You see, extremely premature babies have missed out on much of their prime zinc accumulation window. That takes place from 24-34 weeks in utero

These babies need appropriately small amounts of zinc. For instance, a preemie weighing a little over a pound needs about 0.2 milligrams daily. Scaled up for a 200-pound man, that would be 35 milligrams -- about three times the federal daily recommendation for adults.

The really good news is that these babies began recovering once zinc was added to their tube feedings!

The sad news: These  babies could have been on the path to recovery much more quickly if zinc injections had been available! There has been a national shortage of such injections for over two years. The shortage would be even worse if neonatal intensive care units understood the great zinc need.

To their credit, the doctors at CNMC persisted to find an answer until they got it. They hypothesized that something was poisoning or infecting these tiny lives. They looked into the adhesives used on the babies for the cause. Nothing solved the mystery of the sores.

Then the doctors ordered "empirical treatments," giving antibiotic injections including acyclovir when there was zero hard evidence of infection. They were guessing -- with hopefulness. No luck there either.

At last resort, they guessed zinc. When tests showed severe deficiency, they had struck gold.

Zinc should have been way higher on their list of possibilities! I truly believe that zinc will move way up on their lists. But how many years will roll past until other neonatal specialists and pediatricians in general know this? How many babies will die in the mean time?

And why the shortage to begin with?

I believe that the free market in medicine has been so severely disrupted that the normal economic forces of supply and demand are not operating worth a hoot. Crazy government regulations are known to make up a huge part of that disruption.

+ + Those slams are the same approaches found in Obamacare -- messing with free markets!! + +

Sure, free markets aren't perfect. It's a fallen world. But free markets almost universally beat the daylights out of bureaucracies dictating dumb standards based largely on the perpetuation of the bureaucracy itself!

So, armed with this insider's knowledge of zinc -- take it to the streets, the highways, and byways in your realm of influence!

Yours in health, yours in freedom,
