News you can share: Senator Hatch's Supreme Court misfire, new climate change analysis, and more

Organizing for Action

Diane, you're one of the best messengers we've got in this movement. Here's some recommended reading that's easy to share.

Ginsburg: Having only 8 justices hamstrings Supreme Court
Associated Press // Michael Virtanen

Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Thursday that having only eight high court justices isn't good, resulting in some 4-4 splits this year that denied litigants an opinion. That that means no precedents are set and essentially a Supreme Court review has been denied, Ginsburg told a gathering of court officials in upstate New York.

GOP Senator Says He Was Unmoved By Meeting With Merrick Garland Before Meeting Actually Happens
Huffington Post // Cristian Farias and Sam Stein

Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) said in an op-ed published early Thursday morning that a meeting with Merrick Garland hadn't persuaded him that Garland should be confirmed to the Supreme Court, despite the long history that the two men share. The meeting, however, had not actually taken place yet.

GOP Congressman: 'I've Never Thought' It Was A Good Idea To Block Obama's SCOTUS Pick
Huffington Post // Jennifer Bendery

Another Republican lawmaker is breaking from his party and urging the Senate to vote on President Barack Obama's Supreme Court nominee. Rep. Daniel Donovan (R-N.Y.) said Monday that the the failure of GOP leaders to even give Merrick Garland a hearing, never mind a vote, is the kind of thing that makes Americans cynical about politics. "I've never thought that was a good idea," Donovan told reporters at an an event in Staten Island, New York.

A Drumbeat of Multiple Shootings, but America Isn't Listening
New York Times // Sharon Lafraniere, Daniela Porat, and Agustin Armendariz

In some cities, law enforcement officials say a growing share of shootings involve more than one victim, possibly driven by increased violence between street gangs. But data are scarce. Seeking deeper insight into the phenomenon, The New York Times identified and analyzed these 358 shootings with four or more casualties, drawing on two databases assembled from news reports and citizen contributors, and then verifying details with law enforcement agencies.

Our Most Iconic Places Are Under Dire Threat From Climate Change
Huffington Post // Nick Visser

Dozens of the Earth's most cherished World Heritage sites are under dire threat from climate change -- and some may be damaged beyond saving, warns a report UNESCO released Thursday. The agency, alongside the Union of Concerned Scientists and the United Nations Environment Program, analyzed 31 natural and cultural World Heritage sites in 29 countries on six continent. The areas range from America's celebrated Yellowstone National Park and Venice's iconic Lagoon to the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador and the Ilulissat Icefjord in Denmark, all of which could be damaged by an onslaught of climate-related effects.

5 Reasons the New Methane Standards Matter
Huffington Post // Rosaly Byrd and Lauren DeMates

With the new methane standards announced by President Obama in the middle of May, the U.S. moves further towards regulating the largely unchecked natural gas industry. The standards will cut methane emissions from new and modified extraction sites from the oil and gas sector -- in particular from hydraulic fracturing or fracking sites that extract natural gas.

News you can share: solar power is saving lives, new overtime rules, and a "judicial emergency"

Organizing for Action

Diane, you're one of the best messengers we've got in this movement. Here's some recommended reading that's easy to share.

Solar power is already saving lives in the US. Here's how.
Vox // David Roberts

It's worth stepping back occasionally and reminding ourselves of the original and still greatest benefit of solar: namely, that it displaces fossil fuel electricity. And burning fossil fuels to create electricity kills people, so displacing fossil fuel power directly saves lives. Now a new study has taken a crack at quantifying the doesn't-kill-people benefits of US solar.

President Obama to Finalize Overhaul of Overtime Rule, Boosting Pay for 4.2M Workers
ABC News // John Parkinson

The Obama administration is moving to finalize changes to double the salary threshold of workers entitled to overtime wages. The Department of Labor is set to settle its overtime protections for workers on Wednesday, extending overtime to an estimated 4.2 million additional workers who are not currently eligible under federal law. The administration expects the action to increase wages for workers by $12 billion over the next decade.

Overtime pay: What you need to know about the new rule
USA Today // Paul Davidson

The Labor Department on Wednesday finalized a new rule that's expected to make an additional 4.2 million salaried workers eligible for overtime pay. The rule, intended to boost low and middle-income wages that largely have stagnated, takes effect December 1. Economics reporter Paul Davidson's provides answers to some common questions.

Obamacare brings record low for US health uninsured rate
CNBC // Dan Mangan

How low can Obamacare go? Fewer than 1 in 10 Americans lacked health insurance in 2015, the first time ever in the nation's history that the uninsured rate has fallen so low, and a clear sign of Obamacare's impact. The U.S. uninsurance rate fell to 9.1 percent last year, according to data released Tuesday by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

April breaks global temperature record, marking seven months of new highs
The Guardian // Michael Slezak

Last month was the hottest April on record globally - and the seventh month in a row to have broken global temperature records. The latest figures smashed the previous record for April by the largest margin ever recorded. It makes three months in a row that the monthly record has been broken by the largest margin ever, and seven months in a row that are at least 1C above the 1951-80 mean for that month. When the string of record-smashing months started in February, scientists began talking about a "climate emergency".

It's Not Just Merrick Garland: Republicans Are Blocking So Many Nominees It's Caused a Judicial Emergency
The Daily Beast // Jay Michaelson

The judicial confirmation rate under the Republican-controlled Senate is less than half of what it was when Democrats held power under George W. Bush. There are so few judges that it's hurting the country. It's not just Merrick Garland--this Senate isn't confirming anybody.

A Wolfe in sheep's clothing; The importance of being named Josh Ernest; Learn about Social Security 5/21

The Virginia 11th congressional district convention was held May 14, 2016. The GOP had one filed candidate for Congress, John Michael Wolfe. Mr Wolfe in spite of being the only candidate was rejected by a large margin because the Republican voters were afraid that he may have been a plant by either Gerry Connolly or Terry McAuliffe to give Hillary an even better chance of winning Virginia's 13 electoral votes. If he were truly working for the Democrats, a "Wolfe in sheep's clothing" he could have maligned our GOP nominee and gotten plenty of coverage by the Washington "Macaca" Post.
View this email in your browser
WMAL: 105.9FM, 630AM is a powerhouse station in northern Virginia that airs, Chris Plante, Rush Limbaugh, Michael Savage and Mark Levin. I recently heard an author interviewed on WMAL who wrote a book on optimizing social security benefits who told a tale of how a reader had tried to take advantage of one of the claiming strategies that was covered in his book but the reader was told on 12 different occasions by Social Security staff that it wasn't possible. The author stepped in and got the Social Security administration to follow the law and let the reader use his claiming strategy.

Dear Robert,
Mr. Wolfe was supposed to give a four minute speech at the 11th district convention but according to a lengthy email that he sent to all the convention goers at 10:56 AM he claimed that he had to attend to a family medical emergency. There was a sentence in his email that got my spider senses tingling "If a candidate proposes banning all Muslims from the USA, he just lost swing voters"
That's quite different from the exact statement that Mr. Trump read, "Donald J. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on,"
I asked to speak to the convention on what I had learned of Mr Wolfe, that he had ran as an independent for the VA house of delegates 41st district when there was a Republican incumbent, that according to an article in the Fairfax Connection that he wanted to raise taxes on gasoline and cigarettes and that he wanted to restrict real estate taxes increases to no more than a 5%.  I asked if anyone at the convention could vouch for him. The silence was deafening!
We must be more vigilant, if Governor  Terry McAuliffe is willing to unleash 41,200 violent felons on our jury pool, tampering with our intra-party elections to get Hillary elected is just icing on the cake.

The Democrats in Northern Virginia enjoy politics. They are not content just to get plants to run for Republican seats but they go a step further and find plants that with their ironic names, think Josh Ernest, give a middle finger to Republicans.
Michael Webb ran for the Republican nomination to run for Congress in the 8th district. After losing at the convention he decided to run as an independent breaking a pledge that he had signed to support the GOP nominee. After his GOP defeat he posted a screenshot that showed two porn sites "by accident" The press including supposedly conservative WMAL reported on Michael Webb as a Republican candidate for Congress in the 8th district.
"Oh what a tangled Webb these Democrats weave!

On another topic for people age 60-70 in the Northern Virginia area:
Savvy Social Security and Medicare Planning Workshop
Optimizing the claiming of Social Security benefits is more complicated than most people realize. There is a two hour seminar that I recommend for people aged 60-70 to learn the who, what, when, where and how to best claim Social Security and Medicare benefits.
Who: Seminar is NOT affiliated with the Social Security Administration or any other government agency!
What: Learn how Social Security benefits are calculated; when to apply for benefits; what is NOT covered by Medicare etc.
When: Saturday May 21, 2016 10:00 AM to 12:00 noon
Where: Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale Campus, 8333 Little River Tpke, Student Services Bldg CA Bldg
How: Register by calling 800-654-9714 be sure to let them know that Gerald Geddes recommended this seminar.

I will not be able to be in attendance this Saturday because I am picking up my son at JFK airport.
There are a good number of spots available this Saturday 5/21 10:00 AM-12 noon

This seminar is also offered Tuesday 5/24/16 from 6:30 PM-8:30 PM this will likely fill up but there may be one or two spots open.
