View in browser  |  Get our newsletters Good Morning, Pennsylvania MONDAY, FEB. 19, 2024 • TODAY'S WEATHER Presidents' days Today we celebrate George Washington's birthday, a holiday that has morphed into Presidents Day and a time to recognize another guy a lot of people respect, President Abraham Lincoln. Washington, of course, was our country's first president, starting in 1789. Lincoln, who was in office during the Civil War and assassinated after it, was the 16th.   Because it's a federal holiday, schools, government offices, banks and the post office are among the places closed today.   Of course, we're also electing another president this year. Incumbent Joe Biden, president No. 46, is almost certainly the Democratic candidate. Former President Donald Trump is looking like the Republican candidate, but primaries are still taking place.   Pennsylvania's primary election is April 23. Ballots will include plenty of other names, including state Legislature candidates and U.S. House and Senate hopefuls. One way to mark the day after Presidents Day is to register to vote. (Joe Hermitt, PennLive.com) Updates Identification, not answers: A skull found in Dauphin County 2020 has been ID'd as from a woman who disappeared in 2007. She'd long complained of verbal abuse by the man she'd lived with before she went missing. No cause of death has been determined.   Kayaker's body found: The body of a missing kayaker was recovered from the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg yesterday evening, just over 48 hours after he initially disappeared, city officials said.   District judge shooting arrest: A Susquehanna Township man told police repeatedly that he didn't shoot himself but was shot in the head while sleeping by his estranged girlfriend, suspended Harrisburg Magisterial District Judge Sonya McKnight. She was arrested five days after the shooting inside his home. The man told police he had broken up with McKnight, but she hadn't moved out of his home.   Teen charged after lockdown: Police arrested a 17-year-old on Friday, a day after all-day lockdown took place at Central Dauphin East High School when a gun was reported in the school. Students said they were kept inside without easy access to bathrooms or food. Police said a gun was recovered.   No Paterno Field at Penn State: The Penn State board of trustees has opted not to move forward with the suggestion of naming the football field at Beaver Stadium after former coach Joe Paterno . Instead, son Jay Paterno said, the university needs to continue focusing on its budget. Read more Restaurants Coffee + books: A Harrisburg woman with a passion for books and java recently opened a coffee shop : Wildflower Coffee at the McCormick Riverfront Library on Walnut Street.   Sports bar for sale: Champions Sports Bar on Second Street in Highspire is for sale. The listing doesn't show a sale price but notes the liquor license is included. An employee said it's staying open.   Liquor license denied: People waiting to buy Slurpees, lottery tickets and six-packs at a 7-Eleven store built last summer in Cumberland County will have to keep waiting. The LCB denied a liquor license for the Upper Allen Township store, which isn't opening without one.   New nester: A well-known restaurant and event venue along Interstate 83, the Eagles Nest in York County, has been sold. It will stay open.   Italy in Mechanicsburg: Luna Italian Cuisine, which opened last year at Legacy Park in Mechanicsburg, serves an Italian Trio with limoncello creamy sauce, eggplant and potato gnocchi. Read more More headlines Thon results: Penn State's annual Thon brought in just under $17 million for the fight against childhood cancer, the event's organizers announced at the conclusion of the dance marathon and related events yesterday afternoon. Participants had to stay on their feet for 46 hours at the Bryce Jordan Center in State College to benefit the Four Diamonds Fund.   Nursing home renovations: A multimillion dollar renovation project is underway at a Lower Paxton Township nursing home and personal care facility, Capitol Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center, a 138-bed facility.   Trump sells sneakers: Former President Donald Trump dropped in on Philly's Sneaker Con Saturday to peddle a new product — gold-colored Trump sneakers. Video shows he was booed as he stepped up to the mic. However, he says the shoes sold out.
