Say you're ready for Congress to get to work
![]() | |
| Robert -- In less than two weeks, members of Congress will leave for recess until after Labor Day. But until they do, they'll be in Washington, with more than enough time to get at least something accomplished. Here are just a few important things they haven't done: -- They haven't confirmed a Supreme Court nominee, even though, since 1975, it has taken an average of 67 days to confirm nominees. Judge Merrick Garland is still waiting for a hearing after more than 100 days. -- They haven't done anything to fix our broken immigration system, even though comprehensive immigration reform would strengthen our economy, our communities, and our families. -- They haven't raised the minimum wage, even though it's the right thing to do for millions of hard-working American families. -- They haven't taken steps to reform our criminal justice system, even though new laws could make it smarter and fairer, while keeping us safer. Back in 2014, Senator Mitch McConnell promised that under his leadership the Senate would be "working more." When Paul Ryan took over as Speaker of the House, he promised he would fix a "broken" House. But this Congress is shaping up to be one of the least productive in history, and that's unacceptable. With all of the big issues facing our country, we can't afford a Congress that sits on its hands. Add your name to say you're ready for Congress to get to work and do its job. Some members of Congress are just as frustrated. In recent weeks, we've seen extraordinary leadership from Senator Chris Murphy, Representatives John Lewis and Katherine Clark, and dozens of lawmakers in both chambers who filibustered or sat-in to demand legislative action to prevent gun violence. Nine out of 10 Americans support policies like universal background checks, but when these policies can't get anywhere near nine out of 10 votes in Congress, it's clear that congressional leaders are listening more to the gun lobby than to everyday Americans. They aren't leading on any of these issues -- but they can apparently find time for dozens and dozens of futile votes to repeal Obamacare. We deserve better. It's not too late for Mitch McConnell and Paul Ryan to hold some hearings and pass some bills. Getting something done before they leave for the summer is their job.
