This summer and fall, I’ve been all over the midwest, trying to understand what’s weighing on people’s minds as they assess our politics. I get the privilege of explaining my region – the one I grew up in and returned to a few years ago – to Guardian readers around the world.
I’ve written about whether the blue wave is real, voters' anger about the elite and the establishment, examined Hasan Piker’s influence on the elections, went door to door with people talking to their neighbors in rural Wisconsin about their healthcare woes, and crossed the US/Canada border to hear how Trump’s tariff war affects otherwise friendly border towns.

Voters I’ve talked to are energized, angry, often saying they’re ready for something new – but also that they’re struggling and don’t think politicians truly care or understand.
We go beyond the polls and the rhetoric to talk to voters throughout the country about what matters to them and how they want to see their elected officials address their problems. I’ve even biked alongside a candidate in a Milwaukee bike race, and driven through rolling hills and open prairie of Nebraska for hours to small-town meetups, in order to get the whole picture.
