DEPARTMENT HEADQUARTERS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE Poppy Day platform offers ideas, videos and products of honor The American Legion MAY 7, 2020 The American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary have regarded the red poppy as the official flower of remembrance for the nation’s war dead for 100 years. Inspired by the 1915 poem “In Flanders Fields” by Canadian Lt. Col. John McCrae, The American Legion designated the symbolic flower by a resolution passed at its second national convention in 1920. The American Legion Auxiliary followed with a similar resolution at its first national convention in 1921. The movement – popularized by New York professor Moina Michael immediately after the armistice that ended World War I in 1918 – would provide tens of millions of dollars to help disabled veterans, military personnel and their families over the next century. National Poppy Day is May 22 this year, and an American Legion-American Legion Auxiliary web platform is available again – mindful of limitations that may be caused by the coronavirus pandemic – at   www.legion.org/poppyday. The platform offers easy access to the American Legion Emblem Sales Poppy Store online and an invitation to participate in a national Instagram campaign to collect images of poppies to share with a national audience. The site also offers guidance about how to participate in the May tradition of poppy distribution, opportunities to raise funds to help disabled veterans and learn history of the phenomenon and videos of American Legion Past National Commanders John P. “Jake” Comer and Denise M. Rohan reciting the inspirational poems, “In Flanders Fields” by McCrae and “We Shall Keep the Faith” by Michael. The materials are meant to be shared, in the spirit of the original American Legion resolution, which was called “a symbol to perpetually remind us, and to unfailingly teach coming generations the value of the ‘Light of Liberty’ and our debt to those who helped to save it for us by paying the supreme sacrifice, and that we may not forget that: In Flanders Fields, the poppies grow Among the crosses – row on row.” NATIONAL COMMANDER Coronavirus Updates 7 May 2020, Morning Dear American Legion Family, I’ve said it before but it’s worth repeating. Healthcare workers are our infantry in the coronavirus war. One person who knows about war and healthcare is Diane Carlson Evans, the 2018 American Legion Patriot Award recipient. In her soon-to-be released book “Healing Wounds: A Vietnam War Combat Nurse’s 10-year Fight to Win Women a Place of Honor in Washington, D.C.,” Diane explains her own PTSD healing process. “I was not ashamed to be diagnosed with PTSD,” she wrote. “For me, healing has meant remembering and honoring not just human beings but also memories. I look at them now without fear but a quiet reverence: they are a part of me and are what inspired me to continue to serve my country as an advocate for veterans.” We are certainly glad to have you as an advocate, Diane. The key to guaranteeing our Republic is our ability to have free, fair and secure elections/ the turning point for me was when Virginia Recently negated our voter ID law thereby canceling my vote with an illegal vote/ it is imperative that we have free and fair elections so we must protect voter ID and vote security. 

At the present time we have a number of conservative States in which most conservative principles are followed/ we must protect these conservative States and the right to a free, fair and secure election.

Conservatives all over the country, of which there are many more than liberals, need to adopt and protect the conservative states that we have by supporting the conservative candidates in those States.

 In that way we all can have a hand in stopping the bleeding. 

Luckily our Republic is based on the principle that a minority can protect itself against the Oppression of the majority/ luckily we do not have a democracy in which 51% can oppress 49%/ our founding fathers were very brilliant in instituting a concept where 26% of the states can limit the actions of 74% of the states and also the few people in Vermont get as many Senate votes as the massive number of people in the state of New York.  This is why the Liberals want to do away with the Electoral College, then 51% of the popular vote can pick our president.  

So please learn about the conservative States and locate a place where you can help.  Even better if you're a conservative living in one of these deep blue States you can relocate to a conservative state and enjoy your newfound freedoms/ many are doing exactly that now.

 It is imperative that we protect these states...Please help...We must secure our right to free, fair and secure elections...The Liberals are pushing mail-in voting right now so they can take away this right. 

Your vote may no longer count in your state but you can make a vote count in one of these states.

 I have watched over the years the Liberals and progressives slowly begin to rot our great Republic/ they've done it with same day registration/ restricting voter ID/ encouraging ballot harvesting and now they're talking about Medicare for all/ a guaranteed income/ open borders/ so I can see my Republic slowly rotting away and many of conservative like me Across the Nation don't know what to do/ how can we stop this takeover of our wonderful Republic

 well I've come up with an idea I think it will work and I think it will stop the bleeding and then restore our great Republic in a slow and positive way/ I will share more with you tomorrow

New Coronavirus Relief Package: After weeks of Democrats blocking more funding for small businesses and their employees, the Senate finally unanimously passed a new $484 billion coronavirus relief package last Tuesday. The package replenishes the Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) with an additional $320 billion that will keep businesses operating, ensuring that thousands of South Carolinians can keep their jobs and their paychecks. The Small Business Administration resumed accepting PPP loan applications this morning. For more information, you can visit here: https://www.sba.gov/funding-programs/loans/coronavirus-relief-options/paycheck-protection-program The new package also provides $75 billion for hospital and healthcare provider reimbursement (in addition to the $100 billion provided in the CARES Act) and $25 billion for expanded COVID-19 research and testing capacity. As states across the country begin their plans to reopen, this funding will help support these two critical components of our response. Procuring Needed Medical Supplies: Amid reports of new Chinese export restrictions blocking critical COVID-19 supplies from reaching the U.S., Senators Tom Carper (D-Del.), Bob Menendez (D-NJ), Thom Tillis (R-NC), and I led a bipartisan group of senators in sending a letter expressing our concerns to Chinese Ambassador Cui Tiankai. In our letter, we stressed the importance of receiving high quality testing kits and other medical supplies in the U.S., and we asked that Ambassador Tiankai and the Chinese government work to expedite the shipment of these products. You can read the full letter here. On Sunday morning, Senator Graham, Governor McMaster, Congressmen Timmons and Duncan, and I welcomed the delivery of 1.5 million medical masks to South Carolina. These masks will be distributed to the frontline healthcare workers in our state. We are so grateful for their daily work and sacrifices to keep us safe. Sharing Good News: In the midst of the COVID-19 crisis, I believe it is important that we continue to seek out good news that can uplift and encourage one another. That’s why I have decided to partner with folks across the state to highlight positive stories during this time. Throughout the past several weeks, I have been encouraged by countless stories of heroic South Carolinian individuals – from health care workers to truck drivers to grocery store employees – and South Carolinian businesses making sacrifices to help our neighbors in need.
