URGENT! (SCHOOL CHOICE IN VA)

FreedomWorks

Robert,

Parents and students have demanded school choice in Virginia for years, and now you can make it happen. H.B. 389 is being voted upon this week and if you don’t act it will fail. This bill frees students from terrible schools and lets parents control their children’s education. That’s why you must contact your state representative and tell him to support school choice in Virginia today!

The government bureaucrats and teachers’ unions don’t want this to pass. They want to keep kids trapped in failing schools just to maintain their power. This is wrong and it must stop. No child should be forced to attend a failing school. But the only way we’ll beat the unions is if you act today. Send a message to your state representative today and tell him to support H.B. 389.

Let’s get freedom working in Virginia’s schools again.

For Freedom,

Noah Wall

Fwd: FW: An Open Letter to Rand's Supporters

To all of you who know or know of Ken Cuccinelli, former Virginia State Commonwealth Attorney who first sued the Federal Government over Obamacare, and a candidate for Virginia Governor, you won't be surprised that he is (as I am) a staunch supporter of Ted Cruz.  I also believe that Ted Cruz is our best hope of turning around the sickening advance of Progressivism in our beloved country.  However, Ken is much better at explaining our views.  Let me know what you think about Ken's message below.

Subject: An Open Letter to Rand's Supporters

To All Friends of Liberty,

I know many of you have been supporting Senator Paul for President and today I want to now ask you for your support for Senator Ted Cruz.

I understand your view that Rand has been the most passionate defender of civil liberties and personal privacy – not just in the U.S. Senate, but anywhere in government today.  I agree with you.

While I don't expect you to view Ted Cruz the same way you viewed Rand Paul, I would respectfully suggest that when it comes to protecting civil liberties and the privacy of law abiding citizens, Ted Cruz is – by far – the strongest remaining candidate among any of the GOP contenders for President.  In fact, as best I can tell, most of the other remaining candidates consider protecting civil liberties a vice rather than a virtue!  Rand exposed several of them in the debates (Christie and Rubio) and, without your support, one of them may very well win the GOP nomination for President.

Ted has never sacrificed his commitment to protecting our entire Constitution – including the Fourth Amendment.

When we talk about protecting the Constitution, Ted didn't just start in the U.S. Senate.  His track record of promoting and protecting the Constitution goes all the way back to his teenage days when he traveled to parts of Texas to talk to other teenagers about why our Constitution was such a blessing to America and the world.  Later on, as the Solicitor General of Texas, Ted appeared in front of the U.S. Supreme Court on numerous occasions to successfully defend our Constitutional rights.

Protecting the Constitution and respecting the rule of law are habits Ted has demonstrated over a lifetime. Ted has fought for them as a Senator and, with your support, he will carry them back into the White House – a place that has not seen respect for the Constitution and the rule of law for a long, long time.

But there's a good chance that Ted won't win without the support of liberty-minded Republican voters.

Rand has also been a leading voice for limited government – a passionate shared commitment which Ted has demonstrated in the U.S. Senate.  I would point you to the example of Iowa as evidence of Ted's commitment to limited government.  Of all the candidates to run for President since Big Corn started getting ethanol subsidies and artificial regulatory advantages (cronyism), there have only been three candidates ever to go to Iowa and make the case that Big Corn's special treatment by the federal government is wrong.  Those three are Ron Paul, Rand Paul, and Ted Cruz.

Both Rand and Ted went into Iowa asking for votes this past year, and if they were less committed to their principles, they might have backed down from their commitment to ending Big Corn's ethanol subsidies.  Most people said that with Ted's ethanol position, he didn't stand a chance in Iowa.  The Iowa establishment even carried on an "anybody but Cruz" campaign in a desperate attempt to crush opposition to ethanol subsidies forever. Yet we won!

We won because Ted told the truth about special interests and how they are polluting our politics, and we won raising the banner for free markets and warning of the danger of Washington picking winners and losers.

So, I would ask you to consider this question as you contemplate whom to support going forward: If you think that cronyism (in both parties) is corrupting and bankrupting our government, why would you expect any candidate who won't tell Iowans the truth about ethanol subsidies when he or she needed their votes to go to Washington and tell the 10,000 other special interests that their gravy train needs to go away?!  It isn't going to happen.

If you're as furious as I am about special interest influence and the Washington cartel, then I ask you to throw your support to Ted Cruz!

On the issue of the Fed, the leadership of both Doctors Paul (Ron and Rand) has successfully changed the thinking of most grassroots Republicans, as well as others, about the damage of the Fed's irresponsible loose money policies.  If you help Ted become the next President, he will sign a re-elected Senator Paul's Audit the Fed bill, and that's just a start!

Finally, I also want to acknowledge Rand's leadership in fighting for criminal justice reform. Again, Ted is not in exactly the same place on these issues as Rand, but unlike much of the GOP field, Ted is open to the need to reform our criminal justice system.

In Ted's native Texas, former Texas Governor Perry led the nation to achieve exactly such improvements in Texas over the last ten years.  Today, Texas enjoys one of the lowest crime rates it has ever had during my lifetime and they reduced their budget at the same time.  If tough-on-crime Texas can find ways to reform its criminal justice system while making Texans safer, there is no reason we can't do it at the federal level too.

Ted's record shows that he can be trusted to support the implementation of meaningful reform to make America safer, to make real the opportunity of redemption for those who have done wrong, and to save taxpayers' money – our government is bankrupt after all!

Senator Rand Paul's election to the U.S. Senate in 2010 was a blow to the establishment and a great day for liberty.  I look forward to his re-election this year, hopefully by a big margin!  And if many of you in the liberty movement join us in support Ted Cruz for President, then I hope in the years to come to see a President Cruz signing bills from Senator Paul that will reduce government's footprint in your life and advance the cause of liberty.

To achieve all this, we need your support.  With Senator Paul's departure from the Presidential contest, Ted Cruz is the only candidate running for President who would advance all four of these causes that have been so ably championed by Rand Paul.

To protect your civil liberties, to roll back special interests and the Washington cartel, to reign in the Fed, and to advance criminal justice reform, we need your support for Ted Cruz for President.

Please join with me today to continue to advance the cause of liberty in the GOP Presidential nomination contest by supporting Ted Cruz (www.TedCruz.org).

For liberty,

Ken Cuccinelli, II

What the Economy Needs Now

- by FreedomWorks Senior Economic Contributor Stephen Moore, Larry Kudlow, and Art Laffer via The Washington Times

Everyone’s blaming the oil price collapse and China’s sliding economy, for the rout of the stock market these first two weeks of 2016. That’s part of the story, but there may also be a policy explanation for the bearish sell-off.

Call it the Bernie Sanders effect. In the Democratic presidential primary debate last week between Hillary and Bernie, the race was on to see which could raise taxes and punish businesses more. While Hillary was touting her income tax surcharge on millionaires that could raise income taxes to near 50 percent (and her capital gains tax hike), Sen. Sanders said that a 90 percent tax rate might be too high, but somewhere approaching that number is the target he’d shoot for. Bernie also talks about breaking up the banks, putting Wall Streeters in jail, a single-payer health care plan to the left of Obamacare, and adding trillions of new government spending. So the State of Michigan Walks into a Bar

- by Mallory Reader

If you seek a pleasant beer, look about you. That is what Michigan’s state motto should be. Home to the world’s third and fifth best breweries, the Great Lakes State is ranked fifth for the most breweries, microbreweries, and brewpubs per state in the nation.

Despite the natural demand for a well-crafted brew, the state government insists on artificially manipulating the market. Regulations limit consumer choice, create higher prices, and make it more difficult for companies to succeed. Barrel cap laws, state excise taxes, and hours of operation statutes are just a few of the ways legislators determine the manner in which breweries function. If you are still not sure why governmental interference in the economy is wrong, watch this video. Read more here...

Key Vote NO on the Energy Policy Modernization Act, S. 2012

- by Adam Brandon

As one of our over 5.7 million FreedomWorks activists nationwide, I urge you to contact your senators and ask them to vote NO on the Energy Policy Modernization Act. S. 2012. This bill contains a grab bag of small provisions that add up to a major expansion of the federal government’s incessant meddling in the energy sector.

This bill largely deals with subsidies – the federal government making top-down decisions on what projects and industries to fund over others in the energy industry. Among the winners of this bill would be hydroelectric and geothermal power, various energy job training programs, carbon fiber recycling, new biofuels, and alternative fuel vehicles. While many of these industries may be praiseworthy, the federal government should not be propping them up if they are not viable on the market. Read more here...

Alaska Considers Justice Reform Recommendations

- by Christina Delgado

Known for its beautiful landscape, unforgiving weather conditions, and stunningly beautiful Aurora Borealis lights display, America’s last frontier continues to venture through paths unfrequented.

In December 2015, the Alaska Criminal Justice Commission released the Justice Reinvestment Report (“report”) highlighting problems and solutions for its criminal justice system. The Commission, established in 2014 under Senate Bill 64, is comprised of 13 stakeholders with the purpose of conducting a comprehensive review of Alaska’s corrections and criminal justice systems. Commission Chair Greg Razo asked that the 21 evidence-based recommendations within the report be seen “as a package rather than as a menu to choose from." Read more here...

Lesson of the Week
FWU 1.PNG
Judge Andrew Napolitano explains how America came to be. After oppressive laws from the British drove the original thirteen colonies to revolution, the Founding Fathers were determined to create a new nation based on the principles of limited government and individual liberty. After the war, the colonies were united under the Articles of Confederation, which ultimately led to the framing of the U.S. Constitution. Read more here...

Bernie Sander' Tax Plan Means Economic Hardship for Americans

Following the release of the Tax Foundation’s analysis of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ tax plan, FreedomWorks Senior Economic Contributor Stephen Moore commented:

“Margaret Thatcher said it best: ‘The problem with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.’ Under Bernie Sanders’ tax plan, America would be less competitive in the world due to a punitive tax system, consumers would have less money to spend, and more people would be out of work. Sanders may proudly wave the banner of socialism, but his desire to transform America into a European-style socialist country would leave all of us worse off, even after nearly eight years of President Obama’s disastrous economic policies.” Read more here...

The Absurdity of Regulation

- by Logan Albright

Combating the kraken-like reach of the regulatory state is one of FreedomWorks major initiatives for 2016. While the constitution grants Congress the power to legislate, recent administrations have chosen to circumvent this authority, using regulatory agencies instead to advance their agenda and create de facto laws. Regulations are especially dangerous to liberty, because those craft them are not elected and therefore not accountable to the people. For this reason, rules are often arbitrary, capricious, and selectively enforced. Sometimes, they are downright absurd.

We've all heard stories of children's lemonade stands being shut down for lacking the proper permits. Now, a similarly ridiculous example is the kerfuffle over a neighborhood tree house that critics say intrude into public space. Of course, the location of this nonsense is Washington, DC, the regulatory capital of the country. A family's tree house is under legal scrutiny because it protrudes into an alley by about 20 inches. There have been orders to stop work, and the city has said the family should have obtained the proper permits before building. Read more here...

How better to celebrate Ronald Reagan's 105th Birthday than with James Rosebush, one of Reagan's close advisers during his presidency, and one of the last advisers still on the speaking circuit. Rosebush reflects:

Reagan confounded most of his biographers. He kept his personality obscure and hidden from view. He was known throughout the world as an effective leader yet the world was never on intimate terms with him. The fact is that Reagan, now ranked by every poll as in the top five of all presidents in American history, was a success because of his inner character, values, and faith.

Rosebush will share his first hand experiences with the president and the revelations about what made him great. An inspiring and personal reminiscence that relates to issues of great concern about character and leadership today.

James Rosebush was a Ronald Reagan's Special Assistant and author of a soon to be released book about this namesake of the Lecture Series: True Reagan. The book will be available for pre-order at the Lectures
