Tea Party Patriots - Anybody but Kevin McCarthy

Is the Tea Party dead? Just ask John Boehner. We have the momentum, right now, and Tea Party Patriots is asking that we use it to block Kevin McCarthy's bid to become Speaker of the House:

Dear ---,
This week, House conservatives have a chance to make history. Will the Republican Conference rise to the call of duty and set their mark as a turning point to a brighter future for America, or will they continue to follow the same Old Guard and again squander the biggest opportunity to make history that may well ever fall in their laps?
Call conservatives in the House and tell them to stand strong. Tell them to prove to the establishment that they will vote in block to deny Kevin McCarthy for speaker. Then they will significantly increase their leverage and be able to help usher in a new brand of leadership in the House.
Don't fall for the trap of picking conservative "person x" or "person y" for Speaker. The establishment wants to split the conservative block in the House in order to usher in McCarthy and give us the same old leadership. The most important thing right now is that conservatives stick together and deny Kevin McCarthy the Speakership.
Call these House Freedom Caucus members and tell them:
  1. Do not vote for Kevin McCarthy for Speaker
  2. Stick together and use your power as a block to help usher in a better kind of leadership.

Anna Urman Op-Ed
ATP member and GOP nominee for state Delegate in the 43rd District Anna Urman has penned a thoughtful editorial on diversity in the GOP ("Anna Urman hits back at Democrat Alfonso Lopez on diversity"). "Diversity in itself is not a value," Anna wrote, before going on to point out that it's the Democrats, not the Republicans, who are having diversity problems.

Anna helped us with our school lunch activism project earlier this year. She is running for the Virginia House of Delegates as a Republican in the 43rd District. ATP does not endorse candidates but does support those who align with our core values - limited government, free markets, fiscal responsibility - as Anna does.

Anna's campaign website, with Donate and Volunteer buttons, is here -

By the way, your Executive Committee spoke with an ATP member who has been out knocking on doors for Anna on the weekends. That's saying something, because Tea Partiers don't knock on doors for just anybody, anymore.

Discount at Abe's Flags

Vietnam vet John Lipnicky and the gang at Abe's Flags in Merrifield do a great job. They just made a spiffy new banner for ATP that will be unveiled at our Art on the Avenue booth this Saturday. Stop in; you're sure to meet a Tea Partier, or two. John is offering all Alexandria Tea Party members a 15 percent discount on all items in the store - flags, coffee mugs, bumper stickers, and more. Ask about the Gadsden windsock; it's especially nice (a Tea Party Patriots staffer begged for one when he saw ATP's). The 15 percent discount is also available to active duty military and their family members.

FW Newsletter: The Coming Budget Nightmare

FreedomWorks

Blocking the Budget Busters

- by FreedomWorks Senior Economic Advisor Stephen Moore via The Wall Street Journal

If you want to measure the impact of tea-party voters, look no further. Oct. 1 marked the beginning of a new fiscal year in Washington, and the deficit for 2015 came in below $500 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Although that kind of overspending is still irresponsible, it’s a far cry from the $1 trillion annual deficits during Barack Obama’s first term.

But it looks as if budget restraint in D.C. is beginning to waver. Congress and the White House are quietly negotiating a deal for the new fiscal year that would bust the spending caps that have brought down the deficit. Breaking the caps yet again—this would be the third violation in four years—is lousy policy. It’s also bad politics for Republicans, who won control of Congress by promising budgetary discipline. The Coming Budget Nightmare

- by Logan Albright

Fiscal conservatives have been rightly celebrating the resignation of John Boehner as Speaker of the House, paving the way for new, more principled leadership. But there is a dark side to Boehner’s decision: along with his House seat, he’s also forfeited any accountability that might have reined him in for the remainder of his term. Even now, John Boehner, Mitch McConnell, and Barack Obama are conspiring to craft a two-year budget deal that would combine a whole slew of big government priorities into one fiendish package.

Having narrowly averted a government shutdown by passing a continuing resolution that funds the government until December 11, Congress has immediately turned its attention towards the end-of-year spending package. While the continuing resolution passed Wednesday was certainly an irresponsible way to govern, postponing hard fights until he holiday season when most people’s minds will be on their friends and families instead of the politicians in Washington, DC, there were a few bright spots on the horizon. Curbing the IRS is Easy--With a Flat Tax

- by Dr. Wayne Brough via Forbes

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has been making headlines fairly regularly over the past year, most of them unflattering. From its pursuit of conservative political groups, to missing emails about the agency’s actions and a massive data breach that exposed the information of more than 330,000 taxpayers, the IRS has been struggling to bolster its public image.

Yet recent actions at the IRS suggest that more than a public relations campaign is required to rejuvenate the agency. More specifically, it has been revealed that the IRS is targeting American businesses—big and small—with strong-arm tactics that not only raise questions of legality, but also hamper economic activity. Lesson of the Week
FU 5.PNG
Judge Andrew Napolitano explains that, despite the Tenth Amendment’s protection of federalism, the Supreme Court has ruled that Congress can use taxpayer money any way it likes. With this loophole, the federal government is able to incentivize states to do whatever it wants, by offering juicy funding grants, or threatening to withhold them. The codification of this kind of bribery has effectively put an end to federalism in the modern age. Read more here...

FreedomWorks' Congressman of the Month - Mark Meadows

-by Logan Albright

September was a big month for the House of Representatives, with the unexpected announcement that Speaker John Boehner would resign his seat in Congress, paving the way for new, more representative leadership.

If there is any one man who can be credited with this victory, it would have to be Congressman Mark Meadows. Meadows was elected to North Carolina’s 11th District in 2012, and has since proven himself as a man of principle, willing to stand up to the leadership of his own party when he believes them to be in the wrong. FreedomWorks Statement: Don't Break the Budget Caps!

- by Adam Brandon

Following news that Republican leadership is cutting a deal to break the budget caps, FreedomWorks CEO Adam Brandon commented:

"The spending caps are the only meaningful reform to reduce the size of government passed since Republicans took the House in 2010. Busting the caps, for whatever reason, is simply unacceptable. Republicans are supposed to be the party of less government." Read more here...

The House Ways and Means Committee has advanced legislation that would repeal most of ObamaCare, including the individual and employer mandates, as well as multiple taxes imposed by the Affordable Care Act.

The language would employ the budget reconciliation process, which is able to bypass a Senate filibuster and pass with a simple majority in both houses of Congress. Republicans have been promising to do this for some time, and FreedomWorks has consistently supported these efforts. Read more here...

Chicago Pensions: Time to Tax the Next Generation

- by Ted Abram

Chicago's government has thrust a huge debt upon it's citizens. Chicago has unfunded pension and medical promises of $33 billion, according to the Wall Street Journal.

Over a number of years, the union leaders funneled big, campaign donations to politicians. In return, Chicago's public employees received lavish benefits. In the short-run, who cared if there wasn't enough money being invested to cover the pension and medical promises? Nearly nobody, and certainly not politicians, union chiefs and the public employees. Always remember, popularly elected politicians always please their voting constituents at the expense of future taxpayers. Read more here...

Senators Unveil a Modest but Historic Justice Reform Compromise

- by Jason Pye

This morning, after months of negotiations, a bipartisan group of senators, led by Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), unveiled a historic justice reform compromise. The Sentencing Reform and Corrections Act would bring a number of reforms to the federal prison system, including an expansion of the "safety valve" exception to mandatory minimum sentences, the creation of a second "safety valve," and rehabilitative programs designed to reduce recidivism, or repeat offenses.

Before diving into the details of the bill, it is remarkable that a bill, even one as modest as this, has been introduced by Grassley. In March, Grassley assailed the Smarter Sentencing Act, which FreedomWorks supports, for its proposed reductions to costly mandatory minimum sentences. The Iowa Republican has since softened his tone and shown an interest in some sentencing reforms. Grassley not only came to the table to help forge this bill with senators with different perspectives -- including Mike Lee (R-Utah), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), and Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.) -- but he is also the lead sponsor.  Read more here...

Half Of Americans Think "Government Is An Immediate Threat To Liberty"..........DO NOT MISS THIS!

Half Of Americans Think "Government Is An Immediate Threat To Liberty"

Government poses a threat to liberty, that much is clear.

But what may be surprising is that half of Americans clearly identified government as a clear and "immediate" threat, and are obviously outraged about what is going on.

Oddly, the number of angry Americans has remained consistent in poll numbers ever since about 2006 during George W. Bush's second term, maintaining around 46-49% throughout Barack Obama's entire presidency.

And yet, things continue to get worse and worse with each political cycle, and each new president.

Gallup reported that:

Almost half of Americans, 49%, say the federal government poses "an immediate threat to the rights and freedoms of ordinary citizens," similar to what was found in previous surveys conducted over the last five years.

The remarkable finding about these attitudes is how much they reflect apparent antipathy toward the party controlling the White House, rather than being a purely fundamental or fixed philosophical attitude about government.

… during the Republican administration of George W. Bush, Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents were consistently more likely than Republicans and Republican-leaning independents to say the federal government posed an immediate threat.

… during the Democratic Obama administration, the partisan gap flipped, with Republicans significantly more likely to agree.

Still, the persistent finding in recent years that half of the population views the government as an immediate threat underscores the degree to which the role and power of government remains a key issue of our time… numerous other measures show that the people give their government some of the lowest approval and trust ratings in the measures' history.

So why does the situation between the people and government continue to deteriorate?

The complaints about government's abuse of powers reaches across the isle, and straddles both parties in the White House, yet people tend to direct their anger only at the current president – thus falling for the ruse of blaming the puppet, and not the system.

As Americans shift blame about the state of affairs back-and-forth with every election, most miss the point about why these things are happening – someone is writing reports and creating policies that allow these things to happen. All the Congress and President do is approve them, and deflect attention towards who is running the show.

What are Americans upset about, according to polls?:

Overall, Americans who agree that the government is an immediate threat tend to respond with very general complaints echoing the theme that the federal government is too big and too powerful, and that it has too many laws. They also cite nonspecificallegations that the government violates freedoms and civil liberties, and that there is too much government in people's private lives.

also…

perceptions that the government is "socialist," that the government spends too much, that it picks winners and losers such as the wealthy or racial and ethnic minorities, that it is too involved in things it shouldn't be and that it violates the separation of powers.

as well as…

freedom of speech, freedom of religion, the overuse of police and law enforcement, government surveillance of private citizens including emails and phone records, government involvement in gay marriage issues, over regulation of business, overtaxing, the healthcare law and immigration.

The vast majority of these issues happen under the mis-leadership of both parties, progressing without fail through the years.

It is time that Americans embrace their anger at government, and focus their attention past the politicians to the real problem. Start with the bankers, follow the money, and see where it goes...

Whether it's the economy, climate, the planet, warfare, your future obligations, your pensions, the future of your children, nobody in power tells you the truth. Human life is fast losing the value we would like to tell ourselves we assign to it. We don't, do we? Our technological advances haven't come with moral advances, quite the contrary, our morals turn out to be a thin layer, a cheap and crumbling veneer. What small advances we are making are the last death rattle of a society in decline, and a dying civilization.

Unless you stop clinging to the silly notion of an economic recovery -let alone perpetual growth-, you too are a greater fool, the quintessential one. And until you do, you're a bigger liar than they are because you lie to yourself, so others can lie to you.

What is happening in today's world is a total downfall, both economic and moral, and the two are closely intertwined. What's more, though we're blind to it, as Anaïs Nin said, "Societies in decline have no use for visionaries." Our societies therefore end up with liars everywhere
. Nobody else gets a shot at leadership. Because there's no use for anything but lies, because the truth exposes the reality of our awful situation.

All leaders, as we can see these days wherever we look, talk the talk but don't walk the walk. Every single one of them schemes and lies and hides their acts from public scrutiny. Political leaders, corporate leaders, the lot. This behavior is so ubiquitous we've come to see it as inevitable, even normal.

When you step back and look at the whole playing field and consider the shaky foundation upon which the social, political and economic framework of our society rests, you should be very concerned indeed!
