Then & Now: History for Today October 14 1944 - “German General Erwin Rommel or "the Desert Fox," is given the option of facing a public trial for treason, as a co-conspirator in the plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler, or taking cyanide. He chooses suicide by cyanide.” (Source)
1947 - “U.S. Air Force Captain Chuck Yeager becomes the first person to fly faster than the speed of sound. Yeager, born in Myra, West Virginia, in 1923, was a combat fighter during World War II and flew 64 missions over Europe. He shot down 13 German planes and was himself shot down over France, but he escaped capture with the assistance of the French Underground. After the war, he was among several volunteers chosen to test-fly the experimental X-1 rocket plane, built by the Bell Aircraft Company to explore the possibility of supersonic flight...Because of the secrecy of the project, Bell and Yeager's achievement was not announced until June 1948. Yeager continued to serve as a test pilot, and in 1953 he flew 1,650 miles per hour in an X-1A rocket plane. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1975 with the rank of brigadier general.” (Source)
1962 - “The Cuban Missile Crisis begins on October 14, 1962, bringing the United States and the Soviet Union to the brink of nuclear conflict. Photographs taken by a high-altitude U-2 spy plane offered incontrovertible evidence that Soviet-made medium-range missiles in Cuba—capable of carrying nuclear warheads—were now stationed 90 miles off the American coastline.” (Source)
Mercury One Moment:

On Friday, Glenn Beck spoke of a record-setting blizzard that has killed 75,000 cattle in South Dakota. The storm dropped upwards of 5 feet of snow, closed over 200 miles of roads - and it is still snowing in some areas. The national media has largely kept silent on this disaster, and especially due to the government shutdown, the people of South Dakota and other areas of the Great Plains are in need. As Glenn said, “Everything that could go wrong in a storm went wrong in this storm...Mercury One is trying to figure out how we can even get resources up to help them, what we can do to help them, but parts of the state are just completely out.” (You can watch the full video here). "We Are Marching to the White House:" 1M Vet March Descends on DC--Barricades Torn Down. The One Million Vet March took place on Sunday, and it was quite the event. Check out these photos of veterans peacefully assembling, being met by riot police, and kindly removing the ridiculous and unnecessary barricades blocking the open-air monuments which they politely marked “return to sender.”
Glenn Beck at the Values Voter Summit [Video]: Check out this video of Glenn Beck’s address at the Values Voter Summit. Glenn laudes the few politicians who have stayed true, honest, and accountable to their constituents. Government accountability, and representatives that actually represent their constituents, we’re all about that!
Cleaning Up the National Mall. “On Saturday morning, Glenn Beck joined forces with FreedomWorks and the Tea Party Patriots in a day of service to help “Fix Up D.C.” Attendees were asked to bring rakes, garbage bags, and anything else they might need to help keep the National Mall in a state Americans can be proud of amid the partial government shutdown.” Three cheers for service! What Did Dr. Ben Carson Have to Say at the Values Voter Summit this Weekend? “(CNSNews.com) – Dr. Ben Carson, the former director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University and Hospital, drew a parallel between Obamacare and ‘socialized medicine’ and cited Communist leader Vladimir Lenin’s support for government-run health care as the ‘keystone to the establishment of a socialist state.’ Speaking at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C. on Friday, Dr. Carson said that Obamacare “was never about healthcare. It was about control,’ and making all Americans ‘subservient to the government.’”
Author Robert Greene: Throw Your Diploma Away. The education system drums into us the idea “that we have to study [all subjects]...even if it doesn’t suit us, even if we hate it. And the problem [is] that a lot of people turn off from learning itself--they could be naturally gifted at something...but they’re not getting it at their school, they’re having to learn all these things that don’t fit them...so they come to hate learning itself--which is a tragedy...they could be excited about something that could lead to mastery, but because the whole education system has turned them off the process of practice, it’s gone….the education system is mostly a negative in that sense…..When you get out of college...throw out everything that you learned, it’s fine that you learned about...great novels, but you did not learn how to learn in the real world, it’s a completely different environment. You didn’t learn how to deal with people, you didn’t learn how to deal with political situations, [or] how to practice a real life skill. Take everything you learned at the university and say it was ‘real nice’ and then throw it in the garbage can, and start your real education which happens when you go out in the work world.”
EAGNews: NY Common Core InfoLine Callers Get...Well, More than They Bargained For. “The New York Department of Education website has been directing those with Common Core questions to a special kind of telephone service…But when users recently logged on to the site and tried to connect with tech support, they were given a phone number to a very friendly service. People who called the number as were greeted with a perky female voice announcing, “Welcome to America’s hottest talk line! Ladies, press one to talk to interesting and exciting guys. Guys press two to talk to hot ladies,” the story reports.”
