One Petition could Reopen the Government

The GOP is acting like toddlers having a temper tantrum.  Even though the health care law was approved by Congress, upheld by the Supreme Court, and reaffirmed by the American voters in the last election, they’re trying to shriek till they have their way.  Even Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) tried to remind his colleagues that "the people spoke" on healthcare in 2008 - and again in 2012 - when Obama was re-elected.

This irresponsible temper tantrum has forced roughly 1 million workers to be furloughed and has cost our economy $300 million each day.  We can’t give in to their tactics because that would only reinforce their parlous behavior.

It’s time for Speaker Boehner to do his job and allow the House of Representatives to vote on a “clean” bill to fund the federal government.  If the funding bill stuck to its basic purpose, the budget, without partisan provisions to defund the President's healthcare law or take away women's rights -- it could be passed by a bi-partisan coalition.

But there’s another way to end the shutdown without giving in to their radical demands.  On Friday, House Democrats Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD) and George Miller (D-CA) introduced a discharge petition to bring to the floor a bill introduced last March by Rep. James Lankford (R-OK) called the "Government Shutdown Prevention Act”.   If we can get 218 signatures, a House vote to reopen the government will happen.

We need a majority of the House to sign on. Since 21 Republicans have publicly said they would support a “clean” bill (one with no extraneous partisan provisions) to fund the government and more admitting it privately, we have a good chance to go around Boehner and let the House vote to get our government up and running again.

Will you take a moment to call your Representative and ask him or her to sign the discharge petition?  Call your Representative toll-free now at (866) 220-0044 now.  Don't know your Representative? Find your Representative here by entering your zip code.

Tell him or her to sign on to the “discharge petition” which would allow a vote on a “clean” (no added poison pill provisos) spending bill.

It’s time to end the childish tantrums and get back to work.  The only positive to come out of this shutdown is the polling: 24 new polls show the GOP in grave danger of losing its House of Representatives majority in 2014 as a result.  Can you donate $5, $10, or $25 right now to help ADA make sure Republicans get their comeuppance for shutting down the government?
